Mt Eliza U8 Red 3 v Aspendale 0 (half-time forfeit)
The Mt Eliza U8 Reds braved polar like conditions to record a solid win against Aspendale.
The Reds knew that Aspendale would be a good challenge after their only draw of the season – a 3 all belter on a warm and sunny winters day. We were delighted to help return the favour with 8 degrees, punishing 30-40km winds out of the South-West and heavy pouring rain that combined to offer the glorious apparent temperature of -1. Lovely. Some of the boys had just come back from warmer climes such as Fiji, Bali and Queensland, offering a small shock to the system, but none of them complained (unlike us parents) and they showed great resilience to relish the challenging opposition and conditions.
Defenders Thomas Allison and Ewan Barnes put on a master class and gave the team a great platform from which to build attacking moves. Ewan and Thomas formed a rock solid unit that continually frustrated Aspendale’s attempts to go forward. They played great team roles and offered fine service to their mid-fielders and forwards. Thomas has consistently been a star this year but special mention must go to Ewan who is also fast becoming a great defender and has improved so much. He trains hard and also shows great sportsmanship to team mates and opposition (and leading three cheers for the referees) alike. He is a wonderful member of our little group.
When Aspendale did get a look at goal, they then faced keeper Christian Bethune who would soon place his powerful right boot into the ball and send it flying back into the attacking half - a rare skill for a 7 year old. These defenders also had great support from a tireless midfield of Elliot Melder and Max Silk who both had great games offering defensive cover and attacking flare when required. They linked up well to service an ever improving Alfie Siveyer-Main, who had a good game and has clearly stepped up his work rate and confidence in recent weeks. Ultimately, it was last game’s ‘Player of the Day’ Lewis Jedynak, who continually pressed the ball forward and challenged Aspendale’s defenders. His pressure and pace was well rewarded as he opened the scoring with a fine shot and goal from near the goal mouth.
Luke Batey was then substituted into attacking mid-field, while Callum Helmore and Austen Bettess entered attack. They all immediately had a clear impact on the game. Callum scored within seconds, following some link up play with Austen. Austen was a tireless worker and played a key role all over the field winning the ball. The moment of the game was Austen’s skillful play and wonderfully weighted pass, ‘nutmegged’ through the legs of a pressing defender with great timing, that rolled into the path of a storming Callum Helmore. Callum then calmly slotted home past the keeper for his well-deserved rapid fire brace.
Unfortunatley, Aspendale’s players were wilting in the cold and they forfeited the game at half-time. As such, there was no ‘Player of the Day’ this week as players like Christian had never left the goal mouth to have a chance of earning the award. So, ‘All played well’ and the team took another step in their progress towards Kanagroo level football next year. The coaches were super proud of the boys and the fact that they were all freezing but put the team before themselves and showed the spirit we have been building within the group. Well done boys.
Thanks to Damien who did a great job as Referee (which was duly acknowledged to me by the opposition coach) in trying conditions. He may also be buying some boots this week after slipping on to the muddy deck. Finally, three cheers for Gus Barnes in his new role as ‘Ground Marshall’ – something he was made for – and also his help packing up. Thank you all and go Reds!

The boys played Chelsea on what was a very chilly & wet morning. Although conditions were difficult, the team dominated most of the
play, although running into a strong breeze. Ben particularly, provided a lot of run along the wing. Chelsea scored in the second half but
we finished strongly, with Will, Ben & Charley all playing solid games. Terrific effort by the team in challenging weather!

Players, families and officials did well to brave the cold, wet, windy conditions today on a half water-logged pitch at Emil. Generally the
Greens had most of the possession with Brighton making us cover back on the break a few times. It was difficult to pass with speed and take
corners due to puddles but the players persevered. There was some nice link up play all over the park and Davo scored midway through the
first half. Brighton equalised in the last ten minutes after a quick throw in and a lack of marking gave their striker too much space to
shoot. During the half time huddle we restructured and played some nice football. Following a quick burst of sunlight the game was called
off due to a hail storm with 15 minutes to go. Well done to everyone for persevering today however it was mother nature that had the final
say. Thanks to Ben for reffing in difficult conditions and to Ed for attempting to marshall the weather.

Mt. Eliza U12 Orange 4 - 3 Berwick Bears
Conditions don't get much worse than what it was today. Windy, raining and generally miserable. Despite that, the Orange team turned up to
play and prevailed 4-3 at the final whistle. Each boy dug deep today, and every player contributed against a physically bigger team
who should have had the better of the conditions. We played the Bears at the start of the season and we went down 4-2, so it was nice to
get one back on our ground.
Despite going down 2-nil, goals from Ollie, Kai and 2 late ones from Jem after some nice passages of play despite the conditions sealed the
win. The boys handled the conditons better and could have had a couple bonus goals at the end as the Bears started to struggle with the
cold.
All the boys played well today, but special mention to Dom in goals. It's never easy being the keeper on days like today where any kind of
ball coming your way is a potential banana skin, but he was very assured down the back which gave the boys in front some confidence.
