Mt Eliza Red 5 Casey Comets 0

Pre-match we had the unfortunate withdrawals of Luke and Alfie. Speedy recovery to you both and you are up and about next weekend!

The match started quite evenly, with the well organised Casey Comets not providing much access to their goal area, keeping the ball locked in midfield. Down the other end, our goalkeeper Callum, was kept very quiet but contributed to the spirit of the team pre-match by temporarily nicknaming the team the 'Red Raptors.' (But Callum we'll have to get Coach Mike's approval before it's official). Christian and Austen were working very hard defence, linking up with excellent passing to their defensive midfielder Max. Ewan, in the attacking midfield position was leading the way with many strong efforts to win the ball. Thomas and Elliot were also running hard, but the Comets defence was making it hard for them to get into the game.

Midway into the first half, Max broke through and scored an excellent opening goal which settled the team into a great rhythm. Angus and Lewis, were substituted into the forward line to break down the defensive line of the Comets, and opened up a pathway to allow Austen to smash in a fantastic goal with his, now trademark, long range ability.

The boys were playing well as a team and kept the momentum going into the second half. Thomas, Callum and Angus now made up the defensive unit, lining up in front of Christian in goal, who made two very brave saves and some sensational long goal kicks. Elliot, Lewis and Max were up front causing the Comets defence plenty of worry, with Elliot scoring a lovely one on one goal to put the team in a very comfortable position.

Ewan and Austen, were substituted into the forward line with immediate impact, which opened up the opportunity for Thomas, Callum and Angus to press forward out of defence. This team play opened up a wonderful run forward from wing-back Callum, who shot across the face of the goal into the bottom corner, brilliant effort! The match was then signed, sealed and delivered by our 'Player of the Day' Ewan Barnes, who scored a great goal to close the match out. Ewan worked hard for the team all morning and thoroughly deserved the award.

Well done to all the boys, the spread of the goals shows we are really working as a team, and they should all be very proud to maintain their undefeated run.

Lastly, thanks to our referee, Paul and our first class support staff who made this debutant caretaker coach feel at home.

Such a beautiful sunny day, we have been so lucky. We played this week Casey Comets, they were a brilliant team. At half time the score was 2-5, Noah H kicking our 2 goals with them in the lead. I didn't think we could come back, however we had Archer kick a goal, Ethan S kicked 3 goals and Noah H 1 more. Our goal keepers Noah S and Felipe were amazing. Great work from all our players with a strong defence team. Archer, Noah S and Sebastian were players of the week. The final score was 6-7 with us winning.

The game began with good pressure from Doveton before a corner for Lewis that lead to a well struck shot from Koroush that was saved by their keeper. Great team defence by Paul and Toby followed and Woody was skilful with his feet to create a chance for Paul who was now up front and produced a strong shot that was also saved. The boys started to rush at this point but were encouraged by the coaches to use the time they had which lead to the first goal of the game, an excellent shot by Woody! The pressure from Doveton didn’t stop and they made it 1-1 just before the half time whistle.Early in the second Mt Eliza conceded from an accidental own goal but the ball went straight down field after the restart for a second from Woody who seemed as though he took on every one of the opposition players on his way through. After a Doveton corner the Reds managed to turn it over with a run forward and pass by Paul to Woody that went out for an impressive corner taken by Lewis. Unfortunately, this good work went unconverted and Lachlan M remained accurate and confident with his goal kicking. Marley and Gidi were strong in defence in this half and a couple of defensive headers from Sammy stopped the Doveton goal kicks from getting past the half-way line. After this few minutes of pressure by us Doveton managed another two goals making it 4-2 but the boys showed no signs of giving up and after shots for Sammy and Paul were saved Woody got his third. This hard-earned hat trick made the final score a close 4-3 loss, great game boys!

Sandringham Strikers 10 – 1 Mt Eliza U10 Girls
It was off to Sandringham this week to face the Strikers, one of the new teams recently moved into our division (yay!...), We recently played them at home and lost so we knew it would be a challenge. Even down 4 of our usual players with no subs, we felt positive, bolstered by last week’s good performance and the presence of our new recruits Matilda and Lily 2.0 on board! Today, however, was to be a valuable lesson that we have to turn up every week committed to attack the ball or we will struggle against good teams like Sandringham The first half had some promising signs. Madeleine Hadley did a great job in goal with some excellent saves from a strong Sandringham attack. The girls were putting into place the drill Charles had taught them on Friday night to get the ball away from the centre & play up the wings. Ominously, even though we held them to 2 – 0 in the first half, the girls were being far too tentative on the ball and the improved movement and strength we saw in last week’s game wasn’t there this week. We were too still and held back, waiting to watch the opposition take control, which, obligingly….  they did! The second half was tough going. No subs meant the girls started to tire, some excellent attack and very impressive goals from Sandringham saw 8 more on the board. A few were lucky ones that we created for them with passes directly out of defence to opposition players, a lesson we can learn from. Key thing to remember - If the girls put in place what they have learnt this season for 50 minutes, we can compete against these sides. (It won't happen overnight, but it will happen....:-)) Some highlights, good defence & big kicks & tackling from Gemma Gilchrist, Chloe Morgan and Stella Smith prevented the score from being higher. A goal from Lily Rivett late in the first half was a great moment and she did well as goal keeper in the second half. Indi Bryant continued to be a star with some impressive runs and attack at goal, as did Alex Ewart, despite being under the weather. Lily Morrow and Matilda Rogers-Wilson got into the play again in only their second game. Here’s to next week’s game at home and a strong on the ball approach!

We followed up last weeks tough encounter with Langwarrin Blues with a game against Langwarrin Royals. Played in idyllic sunny conditions at the picturesque country setting of Lawton Reserve, the greens team kept the ball in Langy's half for most of the first half with some good passing, hard running and attacking play. After 12 minutes, an under the weather Harrison opened the scoring and went on to an impressive hat-rick before half time with Harry taking a well taken shot wide of the keeper to make it 4 nil at half time. The hard running Will D took a heavy knock on his wrist and had to sit off for a bit. In the second half Mount Eliza switched their usual positions to give players the experience of playing outside their comfort zones. With Thomas R  playing centre forward, Kian playing Right Mid and Tom Shalagin playing right wing, Langy came out with a more attacking game and our marking was not has strong as in the first half giving them way to much space and letting them in for a goal. Yet again Benji was a rock in goal feeding the ball out well to the corners to the wingers and the ever reliable Indigo and Tommy held court at the back. Louie got forward well as striker and unlucky not to get on the end of the ball. Will MS put on a great display in left back and on the right wing surviving some tough challenges and pushing, picking up player of the match. This was a well-deserved win after a run of challenging games.

After a nail biting draw last week the Blues faced a Caulfield side also on 10 points, meaning this was a 6 pointer… the boys got off to a flyer when Fletcher hit a screamer from halfway to catch the keeper off his line, the boys settled and dominated possession where the chances kept coming, Ethan got away from his marker before drilling the ball into the bottom corner, then Griff burst through the middle to smash the ball past the keeper, Caulfield did press but faced strong defending from lead by Sean and Maxy, 3 nil half-time.  The Blues started the second half as they did in the first with a superb tackle by Kai to stop a quick counter attack and Blues shot stopper Luca's constant quick throws causing the Cobras problems.  Caulfield were trying hard to get back into the game, but Isaac and Danny kept breaking up their attacks to keep the Blues moving forward.  Jordan twice went close to opening his account either side of 2 close range goals from Christian & Archie.  MOTM went to Jai Sheppard grabbing a hat-trick with 3 well taken second half goals to end the game 8 nil winners, excellent work Blues.

A very tight game at home against Rosebud this weekend for the u15s ending in a 1-1 draw.
The first half saw Mt Eliza control most of the play with some great passing through the middle from Jai, Alex and Ben freeing up Murray and Tom on the wings.
The defence communicated well with Darcy marshalling the troops, repelling the long balls Rosebud were using to break up play.
Some good work through the middle resulted in Ryan Scott being able to put the ball in the back of the net on 28 minutes and give Mt Eliza the half time lead.
Second half was more physical early on with both teams unable to get any real momentum. Mt Eliza was unlucky to not score on transition with several shots just going just wide or directed at the keeper.
A free kick to Rosebud on the 58th minute from just outside the box took a deflection off our defence to make it 1-1.
From there the game opened up and both teams had chances to take the lead, with Mt Eliza very unlucky to put a couple of shots just wide.
In the end the game ended up level and our boys take home their first point in four weeks.
The team is starting to work together well and look for forward to a big second half of the season.
Onto East Bentleigh next Sunday!
